Living as People of the Eucharist

Started by Shane Dwyer Jun 8, 2011. 0 Replies

On Saturday July 16th we'll be running a half day seminar on a contemporary Eucharistic spirituality. The focus the Eucharist is receiving in light of the New Translation provides a good opportunity to deepen our understanding and experience of this central part of our faith experience. People are being invited from all over the diocese. The hope is there will be representatives from all parishes, who will then return home to discuss with their Parish team whether or not they would like a…Continue

Resources on the New Liturgy

Started by Shawn van der Linden Jun 23, 2010. 0 Replies

I thought it might be helpful to start this conversation thread on some of the latest resources for the New Liturgy. More and more Diocese' are now developing resources which can be shared and made available to Parishes.  Here is a great PDF from the Dicoese of Sale in Victoria that is a good example.Living Liturgy May 2010.pdfContinue

Just a quick update in response to Maryellen's question. I have been in touch one of the members of the NLMB (National Liturgical Music Board), Cathy Murrowood, asking about the Youth and Schools settings. She said that there is a group looking at existing music for children sung in schools but that at present there is no discussion of the ACBC recommending any children’s settings of the new Mass texts. Schools are free to choose any new settings. They are encouraging them to learn one or two from the common repertoire (recommended settings) initially and that some of these were written with young people in mind. She suggests that in the long run it is important that schools teach some music that relates to the parish community – noting that we want to avoid the situation where students get to secondary school and only know primary school music (and think it is very uncool!). Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for that Jenny! Do you know when the ACBC will decide on the Youth and Schools settings?

Hi Maryellen (and others),

The ACBC website says: "It is the hope of the NLC, that these new mass settings, composed by Australian composers, will be enthusiastically received by local musicians, and adopted by parishes throughout Australia. The choice of Mass settings for parish use is not restricted to the recommended list, but the inclusion of at least one or more of the following settings will assist the establishment a common national repertoire." [emphasis added]. Thus, my understanding would be that it is preferred that the Australian people learn at least some of these settings to help us to pray together, but they are "not restricted to the recommended list"... (see also http://www.hobart.catholic.org.au/Missal_settings.html for information about recommended settings and Other settings that are available). In our parish, we have decided to implement two of these recommended settins as a starting point (different music groups will be using different settings), but would like to build up our repertoire to include other settings so that we can use different settings for different liturgical seasons. I believe that the ACBC are still looking at settings that would be more appropriate in a schools and youth environment and that there are a variety of settings being composed and considered. Blessings, Jenny.

Hi all

I am interested in your interpretation of the word "recommended" on the ACBC website with reference to mass settings for the new translation. I have just been to a meeting where some interpreted "recommended" as "approved", implying that there are now only 6 mass settings that are acceptable! What  do you all think?

This is an area of interest for me. Hopefully I will now be able to keep in touch in terms of developments. My interest is in terms of my Parish but also with regard to the implications for schools.

The new translation has been approved. See the Archdiocesan website.

Jenny - I'm not sure why the CNA article says the translation is "awaiting the full approval of the bishops", since the conferences of bishops were the ones who voted on it (the US being the last to do so in November). Once they'd all voted on it, then it was sent to Rome for the 'recognitio'.

I don't know what further "approval" is needed from "the bishops", unless by "the bishops" they mean the Cong. for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in Rome.

Does anyone know if the recognitio has been handed down for the new translation of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal?
catholicnewsagency.com says that the translation has been completed but is awaiting full approval, whereas the USCCB site opens with a banner stating "Holy See approves Third Edition of the Roman Missal".

FrayneWorks, a Melbourne based initiative of the Sistes of Mercy, have been contracted by the Bishops to provide Parish and School resources to assist in the Liturgical Catechesis.
The web site is as follows http://www.becomeonebodyonespiritinchrist.org/
and is well worth taking the guided tour through the programme.
I'm going to use it as a preview for the Parish Liturgy Group.
The resource is a month or so off being available for purchase, so the guided tour will keep the focus on, for what will be the agenda of the Parish Liturgy Group for the remainder of the year.
I know the priests and the deacons, at their annual Clergy Assembly to be held at galong in May, will be prepared to introduce the Catechesis back in the parishes.
