Official Launch of the Sexual Integrity Pilot Project Report by Archbishop Mark Coleridge and Moira Najdecki, Director of the Catholic Education Office.
During the course of 2009, CatholicLIFE, the Archdiocesan Ministry and Formation Office, and the Catholic Education Office in the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn collaborated on a “Sexual Integrity Pilot Project”.
The Project was initiated to address an identified need for an Archdiocesan strategy for relationship and sexuality formation of Catholic school students.
Evidence is accumulating that effective sexuality education is broader than just one message; programs which make the most positive impact combine facts, values and behavioural components.
The primary aim of this project was to provide such a program, one specifically designed for adolescents encouraging responsible decision making regarding their sexuality. The secondary aim was to measure the impact of that program with a view to optimising its effectiveness for long term use.
The program was delivered to 540 students in Years 7 to 10 in co-educational schools throughout the Archdiocese. The students were surveyed before and after the presentations and a smaller number of students were resurveyed 6 months afterwards.
The delivery of the project was conducted jointly by trained volunteers and CatholicLIFE staff and was funded by the Catholic Education Office and the Archdiocese through CatholicLIFE.
The data indicated strong evidence that the program had been effective in increasing the sexual integrity literacy of the students who participated in the pilot project.
This combined with the extremely positive feedback from the presenters, teachers and other school staff has led to the Report recommending that these programs be integrated into a broader sexual integrity learning framework which is currently being developed.
