Sister Barbara has her roots in the Riverina where, as one of nine children, she was brought up on a rice and sheep farm in the Murrumbidgie Irrigation Area. She was educated by the Sisters of Mercy, first in Griffith and later in Albury.
As a Sister of Mercy, herself, the desire to assist others in deepening their understanding of faith and living it more fully has always been part of Sister Barbara's life. For over thirty years she expressed this desire within the framework of Catholic schools, particularly in secondary schools. Since 1990 Barbara has worked within the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, initially assisting parishes to understand and develop Parish Pastoral Councils. This led to a realisation of the thirst many adults had for faith education. From the late nineties, she has worked closely with Margaret Ryan in: developing and then carrying out an adult education course, initially called the Christian Leadership Programme; now titled Adult Faith Formation (CAFF 1 and CAFF 2). It is the latter that most closely occupies Sister Barbara’s time and interest. Her training has also had a focus on the ministry of spiritual direction, training which included a three month intensive renewal in spiritual direction at the Jesuit Centre for Spirituality in Guelph, Canada. With this and other such training Barbara is committed to assisting people, personally through Spiritual Direction and in providing prayer and/or spirituality workshops.
Sister Barbara loves her work and trusts that it reflects the mission of Sisters of Mercy: to know God's loving kindness and to share it with others.
